System

What is the JUMBO BLOCK system?

JUMBO BLOCK is a modular heavy-duty system of precast concrete by ZANNI GROUP for stormwater retention, infiltration, water storage and fire water. It is installed beneath sealed surfaces, which remain fully usable above.

How does the system work?

Precast concrete modules are joined in a single layer to form a continuous store, closed and sealed with plates along the outer contour. The store captures surface water, retains it and releases it at a controlled rate, lets it infiltrate or keeps it for use.

How much water does one module hold?

A module has an edge length of 2.5 m, a gross volume of 15.6 m³ and a usable storage volume of 13.9 m³. 40 modules provide around 556 m³.

Where can JUMBO BLOCK be installed?

Beneath roads, car parks, squares, industrial, port and airport areas, beneath green spaces and on slopes. The system adapts to the topography and is particularly suited where space is scarce and loads are high.

Are the modules stacked?

No. JUMBO BLOCK installations are always single-layer. Modules are lined up side by side and one behind the other, each rotated by 90°.

Can the system be adapted to a project?

Yes. Layout, foundation, plate thicknesses, sealing and equipment are matched to site, loads and use; installations can be extended later.

Technical data & structure

What loads is JUMBO BLOCK designed for?

For traffic loads to EN 1991-2, load model LM1. Instead of testing single components, we prepare a structural analysis for the whole installation – including heavy-duty areas.

When is a full structural analysis particularly important?

Wherever standard road traffic loads are exceeded: taxiways and aprons at airports, container handling in ports, heavy forklifts in industry and busy manoeuvring areas in logistics centres.

What concrete are the modules made of?

Standard is C40/50 reinforced concrete; for bunkers and protective structures strength classes up to C80/95 are possible. Load-bearing beams and columns have a 25 cm × 25 cm cross-section.

How durable is the system?

The modules are designed for a service life of 80 to 120 years to EN 1990.

How much maintenance is required?

Little. The interior is walk-in and accessible to small maintenance equipment; regular inspections and mechanical cleaning keep it fully effective.

KRITIS, NIS-2 & CRA

Is JUMBO BLOCK KRITIS-ready?

Yes. The system is designed as physical and digital protective infrastructure for critical sectors such as water, energy and transport and increases resilience against extreme weather. Compliance with legal obligations depends on the operator's overall concept.

Are the dashboard and sensors NIS-2- and CRA-ready?

Yes. The dashboard and the water-level sensors are CRA-ready and support operators with NIS-2 security requirements: chained audit logs, integrity proofs on the IOTA mainnet and records that can be verified offline.

Are the JUMBO BLOCK module and dashboard protected?

Yes. Three protection rights are registered with the DPMA: the civil-engineering flood water collection system (20 2021 002 498), the structural element for load-bearing applications including the hybrid concrete recipe (20 2025 000 597) and the IT system for secure sensor data processing (20 2026 000 087).

Environment

How does the system contribute to environmental protection?

Through mineral high-performance concrete instead of plastic infill units, full recyclability and reusability of the modules, buffered runoff peaks against erosion and infiltration for groundwater recharge. Beneath traffic areas the system acts as technical unsealing.

Does JUMBO BLOCK release substances into soil or groundwater?

The load-bearing body is made of mineral concrete without plastic infill units, so microplastics from the storage body are ruled out. Plastics are used only where technically necessary, such as in sealants.

Planning & costs

How much does a JUMBO BLOCK module cost?

As a non-binding guide approx. €3,598 per module net ex works excluding installation; plates from approx. €680 per plate. Project prices on request.

How do I plan an installation?

With the Engineering Suite at jumboblock.org: Hydro sizes the retention volume to DWA-A 117, Plan creates the layout, Design the 3D model, Budget the costs. Structural and temperature calculations are prepared on request.

From what size is JUMBO BLOCK worthwhile?

Typically from around four to six modules (roughly 55 to 85 m³). For smaller volumes our partner Menk Umwelttechnik offers suitable solutions.

Where can I see a module?

A demonstration module is on display at partner plant BBW® Weißensee in Thuringia, Germany. We are happy to arrange a visit.
