Structural Design and Load-Bearing Behaviour of the JUMBO BLOCK System

A system, not a single component
JUMBO BLOCK® is not a classic single component but a modular reinforced-concrete assembly that acts as a coherent load-bearing structure once installed.
The modules are arranged in a single layer and without gaps. This creates a system acting over an area beneath the surface, which absorbs loads not at points but distributed, and transfers them safely into the subsoil.
The load-bearing capacity results from the interaction of:
- frame structure
- system assembly
- structural slab
- soil cover
Load distribution instead of point loading
A key structural advantage lies in the way loads are introduced.
Traffic loads are already spread and distributed more evenly by the pavement structure and a soil cover of usually 80–100 cm before they reach the structure.
As a result:
- local stress peaks are reduced
- loads are transferred over an area
- several modules are activated at the same time
The structural slab additionally distributes loads and couples the system.
Comparable to a cast-in-place structure
Once installed, the system is structurally comparable to a single-layer reinforced-concrete structure.
Design is carried out for each project with reference to:
- EN 1990
- EN 1991
- EN 1992
- EN 1997
This makes JUMBO BLOCK® not a special case but a plannable engineering structure.
Robust and redundant
The system is deliberately designed for robustness and redundancy.
Advantages:
- load transfer over an area
- high load reserves through system action
- low susceptibility to local overloading
- economical, repeatable construction
- modular extensibility
Structure and sealing clearly separated
The technical functions are cleanly separated:
- Structure → load transfer
- Sealing system → watertightness as required by water law
This separation enables clear planning and reliable approval processes.
Plannable like infrastructure
Structurally, JUMBO BLOCK® is not a special solution but a systematically plannable reinforced-concrete structure.
For municipalities and planners, this means:
- high technical traceability
- integration into existing planning processes
- a robust basis for infrastructure projects
Conclusion
The structural strength of JUMBO BLOCK® lies in the system:
Load distribution, module assembly and structural slab work together to create a robust, load-bearing and economical structure.
